Blog Entry #7: The Hashtag
Hello everyone! It's me Austin Manore again! Today you're going to get another different kind of vlog, but it'll still include music somehow, so you can never get away from it! In today's vlog we are going to be talking about hashtags. Have you ever wondered, what is a hashtag? How can they be used and how they're involved in our everyday lives? Well today's vlog will tell you all about that, with the example of music, so stay tuned!
For starters, let's begin by looking at what hashtags really are,
According to the Merriam-Webster.com a hashtag is "A word or phrase preceded by a hash symbol {#} used on social media platforms to categorize content, making things easily discoverable in search results. It was originally popularized by Twitter to group topics, however, hashtags are now widely used across platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Etc, to connect users with shared interest or ongoing discussion." Wow that was a lot, but I hope you guys all know what a hashtag is now, I learned as well!
Next, we need to know how they can be used,
This would be only for the people that have social media. I personally don't have it, however I do have YouTube and I see hashtags ALL the time! So lets say for example I can't go to the gym one day and I need to go to YouTube to see an easy, accessible at home workout. So I search it, and boom, there it is an easy at home workout video. It's called "Beginner Home Workout (No equipment)." Then the description is "Try this quick 15 minute workout you can do at home with no equipment!" Now this is where hashtags come in, the content creator would add it right below the description and it would look something like this: "#homeworkout #fitness #workoutathome #noequipment "
Finally what is an example? Using music of course...
In music, hashtags are used to categorize songs, promote artists, and reach the right audience. Artists and fans add hashtags like #PopMusic, or #Hiphop on streamplatforms to show the genre, while tags like #NowPlaying help highlight recent releases. Musicians also use branded tags (like their name or album title) to build identity and make their work easier to find. For example, #Phil Wickham, and boom, now I see that my favorite artist Phil Wickham is streaming now, all because of a simple hashtag
I hope you all learned what a hashtag is and how it can be used! Thank you for taking time to read it!
